Remember we are looking for realistic approaches to the characters. The tone we are searching for is a strange mix in the vein of Rules of Attraction, Dazed and Confused, Sex Lies and Videotape, Blair Witch Project, The Real World, The Secretary, Mulholland Drive, and My So Called Life.
The following scenes are to be used only for the "Venice Beach" Auditions.
Scene 1
Three’s Company
Chase,
You’ve been best buddies with Rhoades since high school. She’s proved herself time and again as a good friend and a confidant - but she’s also shown herself to be more than a little lazy…pretty much a slacker in fact. This contrasts sharply with your gung-ho-full-of-piss-and-vinegar worldview, though you’ve found its often this difference between you two that makes you such complimentary friends. Nothing deeper than a platonic friendship ever developed between you two, due in large part to the fact that Rhoades likes girls.
You and Rhoades have been sharing a house in Venice for a few months, and, needing help with the rent, have been joined by another roommate, Julie. Since you met Julie you’ve had a smoldering crush on her, as has Rhoades. The two of you talked it out privately and decided neither of you would make a move on Julie until she herself made a choice between you two: may the best man (or woman) win.
You’ve just come home from hanging out over at a friend’s house, it’s late at night. You walked in on Rhoades and Julie making out on the sofa. Humiliated and angry, you stormed off to your room and shut the door behind you.
Scene 2
M/F Soapy
Julie,
You broke off your engagement with your fiancé, Chase, after he confessed to having an affair. A few months have gone by, and you two have been to couples’ therapy. After some deep soul-searching, you’ve been able not only to forgive Chase, but to let yourself love him again. You’ve decided you do want to marry him after all, and have called him over to your house today to tell him that the wedding is back on.
Scene 3
Should I Stay or Should You Go? (B/G)
Julie,
The past couple years have been simultaneously thrilling and frustrating for you. Thrilling in that you’ve watched your boyfriend, Chase’s, career take off as filmmaker - he’s working on his second major movie. It’s been frustrating because your own career as a singer/songwriter has been stagnant. You write heavily country/western influenced stuff, stuff that the LA music scene is slow to hip itself to. You play out, but only small rooms, populated by your friends and the usual drunks.
Recently, Ted, an A&R guy at a record label that’s expressed interest in you, has suggested a “temporary” relocation to Nashville. There’s more of a scene for your music there, more people who would know how to work with the kind of music you’re making. Ted’s also always been a bit flirty with you. You do find him attractive and have been open with Chase about it. You’d never dream of cheating on Chase, but Ted offered you his place in Nashville to stay while you’re working there, something you’re not sure how Chase will take. You want to let him know that you’ve decided to give Nashville a test run for a few months, but that you still want to be with him. Once you establish yourself out there, you hope to get back to LA, and Chase, ASAP. It seems as if you’re on the verge of realizing a dream, but you don’t want it if it means losing Chase in the process.
You two live together, and Chase will be coming home from work soon.
Scene4
Before You Get Hitched
(F-F)
Julie,
You are going to get married tomorrow to Chase. You love Chase very much, but you found something out earlier today that is bothering you After going to the gynecologist for a routine exam, you discovered that you have herpes. You have not been sleeping around, and you have been monogamous with Chase since high school. You suspect he has been cheating, but don’t want to bring it up now because of the wedding. You and your family have worked very hard for this day, and you can’t see yourself with anyone but Chase. You feel like you are living in denial, and ask your best friend and Maid of honor Christy to come over. You need her support and she is the only one you can confide in. You trust her opinion and seek consolation.
Scene 5
Wigging Rhoades, Ratting Julie (G/G)
Rhoades,
You and your roommate Julie have become good friends since moving in together - you met through a mutual acquaintance. You were looking for a roommate, Julie was looking for a place. You two have a lot in common, and share almost every detail of your lives with each other. The one thing you’ve been keeping from Julie is your main source of income: selling weed. You haven’t told Julie because in early discussions after she moved in she told you she didn’t smoke weed and didn’t like to be around it - she was freaked out by the illegality of it. Since it was your house to begin with you never felt obliged to change your ways (aside from delivering to your clients rather than having them come over). Julie’s never been stoned, you think she needs to experience pot to make an informed judgment about it. You baked some pot cookies and are looking forward to surprising Julie when she gets home, hoping this will clear the air between you two and you can stop feeling like you’re sneaking around behind her back all the time.
While you were baking the pot cookies, you noticed out the window what looked like an unmarked cop car parked across the street from your house. After a few hours, it drove away. This really freaked you out - you feel like you are being watched. You really want Julie to hurry up and get home, you need to speak with someone you can trust.
Scene 6
Bus Stop
(M-F)
Cristy Otis,
You come from a very strict right winged family, you don’t have a good relationship with your father, and you love you mother very much, although she can be very pig-headed.
Recently you have gotten pregnant from a one night stand. You don’t even know the guy’s phone number, or where he lives. You decided to get an abortion. Yesterday, your friend Chase was at your house and he found the pregnancy test kit in the bathroom. He asked, and you spilled the beans about the abortion. It was good to talk to him about it, and you asked him to keep it a secret.
Last night, your mother called and said she over heard your friend Chase talking to his girlfriend at a bus stop. She heard him say that “Cristy Otis was pregnant and was planning to have an abortion!!!” Your mom was furious and said she would never speak to you again if you had the abortion. You told her you were not ready emotionally, mentally, or financially to raise a child by yourself. You asked you mom if she would help, she said, “No, you got yourself into this mess, you can raise the child yourself!!! “ You mom will disown you if you get the abortion.
You have decided to still get the abortion. But now your mom won’t speak to you, and it’s all because Chase couldn’t keep his mouth shut. You can’t wait to tell him how you feel.
Chase called, and you asked him to come over. You are going to give him a piece of your mind.
Scene 7
Seduction (M-F)
Cristy,
You have recently gotten a divorce. You feel you are in your sexual prime, and after being repressed in an unhappy relationship, you just want to have some fun. You have been at Tom’s party all night. Tom passed out drunk about an hour ago, and you are the only one left at the party. You had hoped to meet a nice, cute, guy. But only three four guys came to the party and they all had girlfriends or wives. It’s one of those night’s where you wished you could have met a nice guy, taken him home to your place, and had mad crazy sex, no strings attached.
It’s 2am and you just received a call from a girlfriend. She said her friend Chase is on his way to the party. She said he’s very cute. And you can’t wait to meet him…and hopefully take him with you. Best of luck.
Scene 8
Wedding Words
Rhoades,
Today you’re attending the wedding of an old friend. This is the fifth wedding of a high school friend you’ve been to in as many years, and the feeling never stops being weird. Its like watching your old buddies fall into a mold one after another. A problem you don’t ever see yourself having. Since you dropped out of school in your sophomore year you’ve been able to make enough cash selling weed to pay your bills - your Gramma moved off to Palm Springs a few years back, leaving you her old house in Venice to live in. You surf morning, noon and night every day, make deliveries to your clients in between, and smoke some of the finest weed this side of the Rio Grande all throughout the day. Life is good. You’re content. What else do you need?
At the wedding, you were pleasantly surprised to see your friend Chase, a good buddy you haven’t really talked to in years. Chase seems less than happy with his fast track life as a producer. He’s making tons of money and it would seem like he’s achieved what he set out to do on paper: a successful career in the entertainment industry. But you know Chase better than that, you know he didn’t set out to make reality shows where people get paid money to eat bugs and destroy their relationships for the entertainment of the drooling masses. After he got a few drinks in him you could tell he wasn’t happy at his job, or with the kinds of shows he was making. You’ve also noticed Chase is still single…he had a sad look in his eye when the couple were reciting their vows to each other.
You stepped out to have a smoke. You’ve been really enjoying your life without all the hassle of the rat race- you’ve thought of Chase often over the years, thinking what a happier person he’d be if he stopped buying into the Grand Illusion and followed his heart. Now’s your chance to tell him, as you see Chase is about to join you.
If you can’t get him to see you view point.
At the very least you’d like him to go surfing with you for a day sometime this week. You might even be willing to give up smoking and selling weed for a day or two, just to convince him to join you.
Scene 9:
F/F Parts & Service
Julie,
You’ve been working at the car dealership as a receptionist at a computer repair company for several years, and have developed a friendly rapport with Rhoades, an outwardly bisexual woman who works in the Service department. Rhoades has always been a little flirty with you, but not overbearing – you find it flattering in a way, though you’ve always remained faithful to your husband, Chase.
Lately, you’ve grown bored and dissatisfied with your marriage. Chase seems to be away on business more often than he’s home, when he is home his interest in you seems to be waning. You decide its time for some excitement. Assuming from her flirtatious ways that Rhoades would be open to some no strings attached sex, when you see her at work you invite her over to your house “We’ve been work friends so long…why don’t you come over tonight and we can watch a movie or something”
When the scene begins, the movie has just ended, and Rhoades is in the bathroom. You want to at least kiss her good-night…in the hopes it will lead to the bedroom.
FYI: It’s written in that the actress opposite you WILL NOT allow you to kiss her. Your character does not know this.
The audition will consist of an informal question and answer confessional scene with you in character. Then a 2-4 minute scene with you and another improv actor. It will be very simple and we'll help guide you through it.
